No. 22 Seton Hall uses big second half run to dump Indiana 84-68 in Gavitt Games

NEWARK – After a series of missed first half opportunities, No. 22 Seton Hall used an early 20-5 second half run to take care of Indiana 84-68 in the Gavitt Games.

Desi Rodriguez led all scorers with 23, Angel Delgado (19 pts, 11 rebs, 4 asts) impressed scouts with another double-double and Khadeen Carrington (17 pts, 5 asts) ran the point well while finding his scoring touch.

Rapid reaction:

Seton Hall overcame missed opportunities. I thought Devonte Green’s shoeless play in the first half was going to epitomize the entire game. Instead, it was isolated to the first half. The Pirates were -11 in first half points off 11 turnovers which included a few really lazy, absent-minded plays. There wasn’t much of that after the break.

The start to the second half was tremendous. It looked to be more of the same after Angel Delgado traveled and Indiana scored a quick bucket, but the Pirates went on a 20-5 run thereafter to recapture the mojo they showed in spurts over the opening 20 — they also found themselves in the double bonus much quicker than Indiana would have wanted. The run did plenty to calm the nerves of a team that found itself scrapping with the Hoosiers after plays and getting knocked out of their rhythm late in the first.

The Big Three came up big. Khadeen Carrington (17 pts, 5 asts) ran the point nearly flawlessly outside of a few early turnovers, Angel Delgado (19 pts, 11 rebs, 4 asts) did well to impress the dozen NBA scouts in the house, and Desi Rodriguez (23 pts, 3 rebs, 8-12 fg) was as efficient as it comes over the first 30 minutes of the game.

The team looked a little disjointed in the first half. I think a lot of it has to do with them trying to play too quickly and the line shift substitutions by Willard. It looked like Willard did a better job with the substitutions in the second half. On another point which you mentioned, I think Carrington has done a nice job with the transition to PG and seems to be doing a nice job of finding guys around him. Also need to pat Delgado on the back for going 7-11 from the foul line which was an improvement on his average.

It was a bit of a nail-biter in the first half. Some out of control play by the Pirates was in evidence, but the second half was a thing of beauty. This team is prepared to take on bigger and bigger challenges. How about our smiling Angel? Is he enjoying his senior year or what?

Hope the 4:00 pm start on Saturday brings out a big crowd to support the Hall! Go Pirates!

VinBick — Thought Crowd was good and ,quite frankly, was not too worried at half. Hall was sloppy and Frosh were nervous ( maybe with exception of Cale)-Turn around was Sanogo -Nzei had a bad Game both Offensively and defensively. This Team just comes at you from too many places-Desi owned his Guy all night.

One interesting thing happened during one of the timeout breaks towards the middle of the second half where on the broadcast they showed the IU huddle. They showed Miller repeating to his players to front Delgado to make it more difficult for him to get the ball and that if it didn’t work then that adjustment not working would be his fault. Unfortunately for Miller it didn’t appear that his players listened to make it more challenging on the entry passes to Delgado. I just wanted to point that out to anyone who was at the game.

Thanks Matty-did not understand the single, behind Angel D-Miller too good a Coach not to have fronted-or tried .

I loved how we came back in the second half. Seniors stepped up our and tightened D. Angel was a beast and Desi was awesome. Ish was an unsung hero as well. Khadeem was composed running the point and nice that he had five assists and three turnovers. Can’t wait for Saturday’s game against NJIT. GO PIRATES!

    Where was Jordan Walker tonight?

    • Matty P

He sat out due to an injured thumb. I saw that he’s questionable for the NJIT game as well.

Did I hear Coach right during the after game press conference ~ Powell will go off and hit 47 one night! WOW, nothing like a little presser put on your shoulders by your Coach!

Kids had fun 2nd half and I’ll take 51 points in a half every game!!! #HALLin 4 sure!

Great win as noted by everyone. Regarding Angels foul shooting: he looked really good at the line in the 2nd half. He went 0/2 in the 1st half, then hit 7/9.
