Last Wednesday through Sunday afternoon marked the first of the three all-important July ‘live’ recruiting periods and Seton Hall’s staff was out and about like every other school in the country.

The live periods are important for honing in on rising seniors that usually make their commitments in the following months prior to school starting back up as well as the  futher pursuit of rising juniors that will be tracked through their respective high school seasons.

Adidas and Nike (Peach Jam) held events in South Carolina over the past few days while a handful of Under Armour-sponsored teams played in Philadelphia at the Elevate Hoops Summer Icebreaker and then Summer Showdown events that spanned from July 6th to 11th. A full schedule can be browsed here.

Seton Hall’s coaching staff was present at all four events plus the Under Armour All-America Camp, tracking commit Myles Cale, offering 2017 point guard Wabissa Bede and much more along the way. Let’s dive in on a day-by-day basis:

July 6th & 7th

Before playing in Philly, Myles Cale partook in the Under Armour All-America Camp in which Khadeen Carrington was a counselor. By all accounts, Cale played well, averaging 12 ppg, 3.3 rpg and 3 apg over three games.

Targets like 2017 Trevon Duval, 2018 Luther Muhammad, 2018 Jahvon Quinerly, 2018 Naz Reid, and 2017 Nate Pierre-Louis were also at the camp.

Since coaches can’t watch prospects until 5 p.m. on the 6th, recruiting activity was light on the first day outside of Seton Hall’s presence at the UA camp and the first round of Peach Jam pool play where they watched 2017 forward Jordan Nwora of Vermont Academy and The Rens for the first of a few times this live period.

Nwora scored 20+ in The Rens’ opening two games in pool play — Seton Hall also was present for his second game.

Another target that was monitored at the ‘Jam was 2018 PG Alex Lomax of Team Penny, who received offers from SHU and a slew of other high-majors following his performance. A Memphis native, Alex somewhat astonishingly didn’t have any offers before this past week.

July 8th

Things picked up starting on Friday when the staff watched a Las Vegas Knicks game (they’ve offered 2018 wing Greg Floyd) at Adidas Gauntlet, had two coaches present at The Rens (Jose Alvarado, Jordan Nwora — again) vs. BABC and also saw 2017 PG Nojel Eastern of Meanstreets take on PSA Cardinals that night.

July 9th

The next day featured more action, along with another extended offer.

While Myles Cale was in Philly putting up game-high point totals in front of Fred Hill, Kevin Willard was still tracking The Rens kids like Nwora and Alvarado like a bloodhound while 2017 point guard Wabissa Bede of Cushing Academy (Mass.) and Mass Rivals was offered a scholarship.

A 6-1 lead guard known for his deadly outside shot, Bede is not that highly regarded by recruiting rankings and only held high-major offers from local schools Providence and Boston College until earlier this year when VCU, DePaul, Butler and now Seton Hall have come calling; Minnesota and Dayton have since offered and it looks like his stock will only continue to grow.

Wabissa joins a long list of highly-touted 2017 point guards that Seton Hall is pursuing in order to fill a void at that position come the 2017-18 season.

July 10th

Saturday was perhaps the busiest day of action as the majority of the Hall’s staff was back up in Philly to watch Sports U’s under-16s battle WE R1. Sports U’s 2018 class features a ton of locals that Seton Hall has offered: Naz Reid, Luther Muhammad, Atiba Taylor, Louis King, and Jahvon Quinerly; I heard they all impressed although Reid may have torn his ACL earlier in the event.

Kevin Willard and Fred Hill were sure to watch 2017 standout Trevon Duval while in Philly as the WE R1 lead guard is the highest-rated of all rising senior targets. Jersey Shore Warriors, Baltimore United, 17U Premier and Uncommon Bulls (2017 C Ejike Obinna) were also tracked.

In unconfirmed news, it looks like Seton Hall may have offered yet another 2017 point in top-100 Darius Perry of Wheeler HS (Ga.). The Hall’s interest has also been reported in a Louisville paper (the Cards are strong with him), but it still seems a bit of a stretch to me.

Stay tuned for an update from the second July live period, which spans from Wednesday through Sunday. The Hoop Group runs two solid events while Seton Hall’s staff main focus will be the Under Armour Association’s final, which Myles Cale will of course be at.

  • 2018 G/W Sid Wilson. Had been tracked/monitored for a while now https://twitter.com/Iam_SidWilson/status/752901386107547649

    • Fishjam

Sid Wilson is a guy I’ve been reading and seeing a lot about over the last few months. He’s close friends and teammates with isaiah Washington. You can’t watch Washington’s highlights without saying damn, who is that skinny kid dunking off every pass from Washington. He’s a long, athletic wing who runs the floor well and attacks the basket.

He’s very thin and needs to get stronger which is why he just recently transferred from St Raymonds to Brewster went to and reclassified from 2017 to 2018. He’ll likely be ranked a Top 100 2018 player soon as he had a big week as one of the leading scorers at recent UA event.

      • Good post. Yup, I had to do a little research after I saw he was 2018 and not at St Ray, haha. I believe IW has shouted out these two kids on Twitter, or at least he has with Washington (IW 2.0?)

        • Fishjam

Yeah Washington has said he patterns his game after Isaiah and when you watch his videos its obvious. Not as big as Zeke but he has the same moves, especially the spin move.

Washington and Wilson have a friendship and on-court relationship similar to IW and Desi.

  • Announced yesterday, Seton Hall will play Florida in first round of the Advocare Classic. Bracket hasn’t been released yet.

  • Hall makes the cut for 2017 Roselle Catholic SF Andre Rafus. Good thing they’re recruiting him for hoops and not grammar

    • hallstorm

I think I can forgive him for his mea culpa in the syntax department. He can rectify if with classes at SHU!

    • VinBick

When looking at the final seven schools listed, the Hall is at a heady level of national powers under consideration by a stud recruit. The kids in high school now realize that our program is a viable option.

  • hallstorm

i know this weekend is another big weekend for recruiting. Just as a recap, how many scholarships will the Hall have available next year (i know Cale occupies one already)?

    • For the 2017 class? As of now, Cale would be occupying Madison Jones’ spot, leaving 13. But you can bet there will be at least 1 outgoing transfer, who knows if Jevon Thomas will still be here, etc.

  • VinBick

A bit of confusion surrounds this upcoming season’s team. Has anyone left the team or transferred out, officially? Is Thomas suspended, ineligible, or not playing for some NCAA ruling? What is the status of Anderson? Any scholarships available for a fifth year transfer like Gordon was a year ago? Anyone have insight that can be shared here with the rest of us Pirate fans who are hungry for accurate information? Thanks in advance.

    • Sorry for the late reply. Seton Hall is officially 1 scholarship over the limit, but that won’t be the case for the start of the season. Thomas in ineligible until he completes another semester — that has been in stone for some time now and reported here awhile ago.

Anderson is expected to vacate his scholarship, but I haven’t heard what the plan is for him (grad. asst., etc.) — I’ve heard this is far from a forcing out scenario

      • VinBick

Your clarification is helpful, Chris. So, no one else on the team has transferred out, and no fifth year player at the guard position has been added?

        • Correct on the first count, but Madison Jones is a graduate transfer and a guard

          • VinBick

What information is available on Madison Jones?
