Eron Gordon commits to Seton Hall

Seton Hall has picked up a commitment from 6-foot-2 scoring guard Eron Gordon of Indianapolis Cathedral (In.), who announced his decision on Monday night.

The Hall’s recruitment of Gordon, which has been spearheaded by associate head coach Shaheen Holloway along with Kevin Willard, has been well-documented since prior to his official visit last October.

The younger brother of New Orleans Pelican’s Eric Gordon, Eron joins already-signed top-100 shooting guard Myles Powell as part of the Hall’s 2016 recruiting class.

What this means for Seton Hall:

They are now adding a pair of two-guards with their 2016 class, making the road for playing time a bit more narrow in the back court. Seton Hall is technically one guy over the scholarship limit at this point and is still pursuing big man Taurean Thompson, but that will work itself out between Isaiah Whitehead’s pending decision and outgoing departures.

I don’t see how the commitment relates to Isaiah Whitehead’s decision. From what I’ve gathered, Gordon is not close to point guard ready at this level (he’s a scoring guard) and he shouldn’t be considered as such; not to mention Whitehead 100-percent has not decided as of Monday night. Gordon does add more versatility and athleticism than Myles Powell, who primarily excels from the perimeter.

If you take Eron’s borderline top-150 ranking at face value, this is the second time in the last three classes that Kevin Willard has landed multiple ranked prospects. Willard and his staff will need to do even better in 2017 with a litany of highly-rated kids on their radar.

Congrats to Coach Willard and his Staff — have to believe they see more than I do although I do believe he is a better Athlete than Myles Powell

I like Gordon. He’s a good athlete, I think he’ll do well defensively and is a solid scorer. Seems like a really good finisher around the hoop and through contact. Not sure about his shooting though I’ve read it’s decent. Also comes from a well-connected family so may help in future recruiting. Believe his family sponsors a big AAU team. Solid pickup for Sha and Willard….keep adding talented players, that’s how depth and programs are built.

This is good news. I’d like to know when the transfer players will be announced. IW’s decision could mean a lot to Taurean Thompson’s ultimate decision. If The Hall has all these guys in their backcourt next year, Thompson could see this as a great team to be a part of.

I’m assuming Williard knows which way IW is leaning and I’m guessing Thomas knows his fate even now.

    • IW’s fate has more to do with JT and Madison Jones. Nothing has been decided yet

Remember, D1 scholarships are 1YR renewable contracts. somebody will be walking the plank.

You can’t take away a scholarship though due to athletic performance can you? Doesn’t there have to be some sort of academic issue or behavior breach?

        • Joe Schmoe

D1 Scholarships are 1YR renewable contracts, that can be “non-renewed” for any reason (including lack of athletic performance) by notification in writing to the athlete no later than July 1st.

Thanks for the info. I wasn’t aware of that. I would have to think that programs would be very careful about this though. You don’t want a reputation of a program that let’s good student athletes go that just aren’t finding the playing time and are also model students off the court.

I think its all a matter of business, and only comes into play the more competitive the program is.

This is good news. Always nice to have depth at the guard position. I like that Gordon comes from great bloodlines. Hopefully he helps create a pipeline for other guards to come.

Short little article about Eron and why he chose Seton Hall. Sounds like his Dad sold him on Seton Hall….told you he comes from a great family.

Kinda just hit me, but currently (depending on who transfers) The Hall is the 3-myle(s) club

I don’t know much about his game… But he did wear a suit to his announcement… and our cap. Welcome, Eron.

Welcome Eron to the Pirate Nation. You are joining a great team and a welcoming Seton Hall family.

  • Just added an interview above that Eron did right after his announcement last night. Seems like a well-spoken kid
