5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8th marks the first of three four-day long evaluation periods this month in which college coaches hit the recruiting trails in search of 2016 targets and beyond.
With at least one scholarship available for rising high school seniors, Seton Hall’s staff will be among the throng of coaches that literally flood through gym doors across the country when the clock strikes 5 today.
Based on recent visits, the staff looks set on acquiring one post forward and one guard in the 2016 class. Derrick Gordon vacates a scholarship next summer while it’s not far-fetched to think that one or both of Isaiah Whitehead and Angel Delgado will pursue professional opportunities after the 2015-16 season.
Here is where the staff will be and which recruits they may be tracking over the next four days.
Nike Peach Jam (North Augusta, Georgia) – July 9-12
This is the grand finale for the Nike EYBL circuit and it’s always loaded with a ton of talent. Kevin Willard will assuredly be the staffer on hand in Georgia where familiar AAU teams like the New Jersey Playaz (Myles Powell, Taurean Thompson, Jagan Mosely), New York Lightning (Shamorie Ponds, Jordan Tucker, Rodney Miller), PSA Cardinals (Bryce Aiken), and Albany City Rocks (Quinton Rose) will compete.
That’s a long list of primary 2016 targets of which Powell, Mosely and Miller have recently visited South Orange. Let’s not forget that Angel Delgado, Khadeen Carrington and Veer Singh are products of the NY Lightning program.
Under Armour All-American Camp (Charlotte, NC) – July 7-10
A new event this year, only half of the UA camp will be open to college coaches, but Seton Hall’s staff will still be represented.
Recruits the Hall has offered that will be in attendance are 2016s like top-50 guard Markelle Fultz (DeMatha Catholic, Md.), and Cardozo (N.Y.) guard Rashond Salnave as well as 2017s Hamidou Diallo (Woodstock Academy, Conn.) and Daniel Mading (Brewster Academy, N.H.).
Adidas Uprising Gauntlet (Atlanta, Georgia) – July 8-11
While Kevin Willard is waiting for the Peach Jam to kick off tomorrow, he may be in Atlanta checking out adidas’ event this week.
There aren’t a ton of big name AAU programs registered, but semi-regional clubs like New England Playaz (Tremont Waters) and NY Rens (Rawle Alkins) will be there. Perhaps another under-recruited prospect can be found as Dalton Soffer’s AAU team, Gamepoint, will be in Atlanta.
Elevate Hoops Summer Icebreaker (Philadelphia, Pa.) – July 8-10
Also known as the Elevate Breakout Classic, which I attended last summer, the Icebreaker is the closest event to North Jersey and Shaheen Holloway is set to attend the first day (Showcase Games) or two as he did last year.
It’s tough to get a big lineup of top-100 prospects with the other three ‘shoe events’ (Nike, Adidas, Under Armour) taking place simultaneously, but local AAU programs like Team Philly and WE R1 will attend along with droves of other regional prospects.
Elevate Hoops will also host the Showdown later this month that should have a better field.
