USF transfer Geno Thorpe visiting Seton Hall on Tuesday

As reported last month, South Florida graduate transfer Geno Thorpe will visit Seton Hall this week following a trip to Pittsburgh.

While there was conflicting information that indicated Thorpe would not make it to South Orange, the 6-4 natural two-guard from South Florida will indeed be in South Orange tomorrow; he is also considering Syracuse and UMass.

Despite not being a pure point guard, Thorpe (15.1 ppg, 4.6 apg) proved more than capable for a bad USF team after starter Jahmal McMurray was suspended to start the season before leaving the program in December.

If Thorpe were to commit, he would presumably allow Khadeen Carrington to stay at the ‘two’ and split time with freshly-inked Patrick School (N.J.) distributor Jordan Walker.

This scenario does pose a problem though as the two-guard spot is already a log jam with rising freshman Myles Powell and impressive top-100 incoming recruit Myles Cale also capable of playing Big East minutes.

Although Kevin Willard could hypothetically roll out some three-guard looks and eat into Desi Rodriguez‘ minutes at small forward, it looks like reserve guard Eron Gordon (4.1 mpg) could be the odd man out; Seton Hall currently has one scholarship remaining.

In related recruiting news, Seton Hall received a visit from East Carolina transfer Elijah Hughes (7.8 ppg, 2.3 rpg) this past weekend.

A highly-athletic 6-6 wing, Hughes would have to sit out next season but projects as a capable replacement for Rodriguez in 2018-19.

Hughes is a native of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and played his senior year with Myles Powell at South Kent (Conn.) after transferring from Kennedy Catholic (N.Y.) — you can spot Powell on the bench in a boot at :15 of this clip; Hughes is scheduled to visit Syracuse next week.

Agree with Fishjam( I know I have written this before) that if Hall can get Thorpe it would be Great– Let Coach worry about playing time–which ,I believe, be a welcome worry.
I guarantee that Myles Cale (and Myles Powell) will earn plenty of time and that Hall’s D will be so much better than last year. With Thorpe, Hall may be favorite for Big East and definitely a top 20 Team.

    • hallstorm

I would concur with that theory LBP.

  • Matty P

Thorpe would be a nice pickup for next season to help give Walker a little extra time to develop. I would rather have him playing at the PG position instead of Carrington and mix Powell and Cale in a 3 guard set while Desi gets rest.

As for the Duval situation, I feel like he’s doing a good job of grabbing SHU fans interest between him wearing SHU gear during an interview and his retweet. His final act will be initially grabbing the SHU hat during his announcement and then throwing it to the side before grabbing the Duke hat and having his highlight reel play in the background.

  • Matty P

On a BE related note it looks like DePaul is trying to take a page out of SHU’s playbook from a couple years back. Hired an assistant coach which helped them get the commitment from Campbell, who’s a 5 star 2019 (looking to reclass to 2018) prospect. An article also mentioned this coach also coached up a 5 star rated 2017 prospect who they are expected to go hard after. Would be quite a change for the perennial bottom of the BE team to get 2 highly rated recruits.

    • hallstorm

That’s a nice pickup for DePaul. Impressive. They are also the “lean” for 5-star wing Brian Bowen (who had been leaning toward Creighton). I like seeing the Big East getting big time recruits to places other than Villanova (and Xavier and Marquette to a bit lesser extent). This league can be very highly competitive in the coming years.

    • Would be nice to see DePaul relevant again…

      • Matty P

Agreed. I bet the BE and Fox Sports have been dreaming of the day where they can begin to become relevant in the Chicago market.

        • LBP

they will open brandy new stadium and DePaul desperately needs to be relevant–it is the largest Catholic U in the country

    • Fishjam

Maybe Dr. Esteban gave them our playbook. Great move by DePaul – coaches/programs have been doing it for years to jumpstart things. The key is can you keep it going.

  • SHU95

Thorpe may want to go where there is more playing time (I never thought I would be saying that about SHU) but I agree we need more depth at PG. A guy who could give steady play for 10-12 min a game and provide depth in case of an injury…

    • Tough to gauge depth w/o knowing what position Thorpe is demanding minutes at, but Syracuse looks relatively set at PG (Franklin Howard + 2017 commit) while Pitt has a top-150 PG coming in (Marcus Carr) but that’s about it besides their 8 MPG reserve from last season

  • Andrew Herbst

I’d like to get Thorpe. He could be a nice mentor for Walker. We could use another PG. Can’t have too much depth.

  • VinBick

Watched Thorpe play a couple of times last year and he was a steady, capable guard. He is a viable option to add an experienced player to help take some of the pressure off of an incoming freshman.

  • PadrePirate

I get what all you guys have said about advantages to having an experienced PG in Thorpe. But honestly, I’d rather pick up Hughes as a redshirt. Reasons: 1) avoid the log jam at SG with KC, Powell, and Cale; 2) Thorpe sounds like KC part II, i.e. a shooter/slasher who can play at the one if need be but not a natural playmaker; if that’s true, why bother bringing on another one? 3) We have no one preparing to spell Desi at SF, unless Mamu is going to play as an oversized wing (as some have suggested recently).

    • Louie Dee

4.6 apg, sounds like a playmaker to me. No one on the SHU rooster is even close. We need him!

  • Joe Schmoe

Why did Trevon Duval retweet a pic of himself in a Pirate Jersey? Is he playing more games?

    • Matty P

My only guess is to try and create some buzz around himself prior to his announcement since it gets SHU fans excited, Duke fans a little nervous, and makes the other remaining schools question why. He’s mentioned before that he wants to make the announcement something special, so I guess this would be his way of creating a little drama.

      • Joe Schmoe

        Sooooo…..he’s just playing games.

        • Matty P

That would be my guess. Seems like these kids want to make things more exciting instead of the typical announcements that used to occur.

          • 11yearplan

… or SHU is still in the running and he is waiting on an announcement from AD. As I posted before, this may not be drama created by TD. Drama will not make his announcement special.

Matty I love your posts but I disagree with your analysis above. TD does not need to create buzz around himself and there is no benefit to him by making SHU fans excited, Duke fans nervous or other schools question anything.

          • Matty P

You might be correct, it might not be drama and he might be seriously considering SHU depending on AD and waiting for everything else to get finalized around Duke and the other programs.

My main reason for thinking he might be trying to create buzz is because his recruitment process has been so long and drawn out. On top of that he does it right around the same time that Kevin Knox announces his decision. I guess I just have this feeling since kids in HS and college seem to be finding ways to market themselves, create excitement around them, and getting people to talk about them more in the media today than in the past.

  • Matty P

I noticed Carino mentioned in his article of the Monmouth-Kentucky home and home that SHU was in preliminary discussions to setup a home and home with Kentucky until Louisville came along with a better offer. He mentioned that Kentucky wanted the game at MSG instead of the Rock and that they might have been pushing to have their own refs for the game. It looks like SHU made the right decision to go with Louisville, but it’s nice to hear that there’s interest from perennial NCAA tournament programs to play against SHU.

    • VinBick

Grateful that the Hall did not accept an offer from Kentucky with such outrageous demands. “Pushing to have their own refs” mentioned by Carino exposes their arrogance and condescension toward the Big East and/or Seton Hall. They have a coach with a shady background at best and living on the reputation of past glory days.

  • Joe Schmoe

Duval tweeted a pic of himself in an Arizona Jersey now… OHHH the drama! now its just games. Hope your having fun with it trevon!

    • Matty P

At least with this one it was a retweet of a recent post. The retweet from Whitehead’s was a post that Whitehead made months ago.

    • Joseph Attanasi

Do we really need a kid like Duval who seems to only care about himself? I know he’s a great talent, but it feels like we’re selling our soul to the devil.

      • Joe Schmoe

in this case I think your right. Duval is a one and done and hes going to want the 2017-18 season to be all about his stats, which doesn’t help the team. I want to see SHU be a winner next year. Really excited to see Myles Cale on the floor Powell next year.

  • SC

Guys.. AD is gone.. Signed with an agent today. You will hear about it shortly. Sucks..

    • PadrePirate

Wow. I thought he didn’t make the combine, meaning that his NBA dreams were over. Haven’t heard any news since…Did he have a good work out somewhere and get a promise??

      • SC

My buddy is a big booster and told me that he just heard his GF’s family was in his ear about going pro. And an agent was in her ear to convince him. Some He Got Game shhh..I hope I’m wrong, but my buddy said he heard today that his AD guys said he was signing today. Too bad man. Guy could’ve been a Seton Hall and Big East legend with the numbers he’d put up.

        • PadrePirate

Just checked the lists online to be sure. He really didn’t make the combine, unless the reports are wrong. I’m no expert, but that sends a strong message that teams are not interested in you. I can’t imagine why he would get an agent after that, unless some team promised to take him 2nd round… I guess I’ll save my panic/depression until I get more news

          • Matt

            Overseas though big money?

          • PadrePirate

Would he really need an agent to go Pro overseas? I assumed the above “leak” was for NBA, but overseas would make more sense, since he didn’t get invited to the combine. In that case, I didn’t think an agent was necessary…

Just checked Chris’ twitter feed. He says he’s heard “tremors” but nothing official to report yet.

          • Matty P

Would probably be the smart idea to get an agent since someone would need to work out contract terms.

The only team I’ve heard Delgado meeting with was the Atlanta Hawks. So I guess there’s an outside chance that if they wanted to they could use the last pick of the draft to take Delgado. But I honestly can’t say I know their roster situation well enough to know if they would be seriously interested.

Forbes put together a list of the 10 best coaches to have for the next 10 years and they included Willard on the list (most of the bigger name coaches were on the prior year list which they excluded those individuals). https://www.forbes.com/sites/richcampbell/2017/04/04/10-best-ncaa-basketball-coaches-for-the-next-10-years-2/#6316aee10174

Sad situation if Angel leaves the team for the money in Europe. Family pressure and big bucks now may be stronger than logic of securing a college degree and stronger career options down the road.
