Seton Hall hosts La Salle in first exhibition tune-up

Seton Hall fans will get to see their team in action for the first time when the Pirates host La Salle tonight at Walsh Gym.

A few days removed from beating Boston College 86-71 behind closed doors, Seton Hall will play the first of two exhibition games with Division II LIU Post coming to town on Saturday.

Added late-on as a Puerto Rico hurricane relief game, tonight’s clash sees a Pirates team equipped with a fresh No. 23 preseason AP ranking against a La Salle group picked ninth in the preseason Atlantic 10 poll.

The Pioneers (15-15, 9-9) are led by former Syracuse forward BJ Johnson (17.6 ppg, 6.3 rpg) — a second-team all-conference selection — and one-time Hall recruit Pookie Powell (13.7 ppg, 3.1 apg) at point guard.

The game won’t be televised on TV, but 89.5 WSOU will have the call at 7:30 and live stats can be browsed here.

Three things to watch for, my projected starting lineup, and predicted outcome are all below.

  1. Point guard play. Expecting Khadeen Carrington to become a pass-first guy over a summer is not realistic. Keep an eye on the transition here but also how the rest of Seton Hall’s offense adapts to not having a pure point guard; Was Kevin Willard’s preseason hype of Eron Gordon accurate?
  2. New-comer impact. How much time will Sandro Mamukelashvili, Myles Cale, and Jordan Walker see? Pirates fans are anxious to witness what they can do right away.
  3. Off-season rust. Big expectations and a No. 23 ranking… These games don’t count, but they can build — or hold back — momentum heading into the season.

Projected starters:
PG – Khadeen Carrington
2G – Myles Powell
F – Desi Rodriguez
F – Ish Sanogo
C – Angel Delgado

Score: SH 83-68
