NEWARK — With their season on the ropes, Khadeen Carrington channeled his inner Isaiah Whitehead by pouring in 41 while Angel Delgado scored 15 and snared 12 rebounds in the second half en route to a massive 87-81 win over No. 20 Creighton.
Showing no correlation between crowd support and quick starts, both teams got off to an electric first few minutes that included a confusing stretch of play after the officials deliberated about a whether a Creighton bucket was a two or a three.
The dispute seemed to kill momentum slightly as a three-minute Pirate drought was matched by a five-minute scoreless streak from Creighton which allowed a 10-2 Seton Hall run to 21-19.
Seton Hall played one of their better offensive first halves of the season due to Khadeen Carrington (41) playing out of this world en route to a stellar first half and an incredible game which was aided initially by 18 points from Desi Rodriguez.
Angel Delgado (17 pts, 17 rebs) and Justin Patton (15 pts) largely cancelled each other out in the first half while Ish Sanogo (3 pts, 7 rebs) was clearly not 100-percent but made an impact in many areas; Delgado took over after the half.
After getting shut down during brief stretches in the first half, Creighton really got their offense going in the second half via run-outs and quick baskets from out-of-bounds plays, justifying the seventh-shortest offensive possession length in the country.
An 11-5 run provided a brief 56-55 lead for Seton Hall but a myriad of mysterious calls — for both sides — preceded a three-point deficit at 67-64 coming out of the under-eight.
Carrington and Marcus Foster (23 pts, 6 rebs, 6 asts) seemed to trade tough hoop after tough hoop in an unofficial game of HORSE for portions of the second half en route to Khadeen setting a new career-high of 41 which was set after he gave the Pirates a 69-67 lead.
Tied a 74 with three to play, it was Delgado who scored a manly three points after getting wrapped up in the paint and was followed up by a worldly running bank-shot from Carrington to put Seton Hall up 79-76 with 41 ticks left — those two Pirates took over by scoring 31 of the Hall’s last 33; Carrington scored the last 10 including a thief plus dunk after Creighton tried to roll an inbounds pass to half court.
