NEW YORK – The BIG EAST released their annual preseason Coaches’ Poll this morning at media day, with reigning national champions Villanova unanimously receiving the number one for the third season in a row and Seton Hall tying with Georgetown for fourth in the league.
First-place votes and total points in parenthesis.
1. Villanova (9; 81 pts)
2. Xavier (1; 69 pts)
3. Creighton (64 pts)
4. Seton Hall (53 pts)
4. Georgetown (53 pts)
6. Butler (44 pts)
7. Marquette (35 pts)
8. St. John’s (21 pts)
9. Providence (18 pts)
10. DePaul (12 pts)
Seton Hall’s Angel Delgado and Khadeen Carrington were also selected to the All-Conference second team.
Thoughts: There isn’t much surprise at the top of the standings with Villanova, Xavier and Creighton always likely to receive the top-three spots, in that order. The middle of the pack projects to have the most variation with Seton Hall, Georgetown, Marquette and Butler all jockeying for position.
It’s a bit disorienting to see post-Kris Dunn Providence projected to finish so low while St. John’s and DePaul have been mainstays in the bottom-three for a few years now.
As far as all-conference teams go, I don’t think Carrington or Delgado were snubbed, but either one definitely has the potential to make the first-team by time the season is over even though the competition will be fierce with the Big East poised for a big year.
